Meet Mopé, our Mentor.
Mopé is currently a trainee solicitor for Burges Salmon, a UK top 50 law firm. Having sat with the Corporate fFnance team and currently training in the firm’s Tax and Trusts department, Mopé has a desire to encourage BAME women to consider applying to large corporate and commercial law firms and is inspired to be part of those who seek to break down the barriers in these spaces.
Mopé studied at the University of Sheffield, graduating in 2020 with an Honours Degree in European and International Law and went on to complete her MSc LPC in 2023 with Distinction. Mopé's time during her undergraduate and postgraduate studies enabled her to hone on necessary skills to become a successful solicitor, including her interpersonal skills and high attention to detail.
Aside from Commercial Law, Mopé has always been keen to give back to her community. Mopé currently mentors 16–18-year-olds interested in the legal sphere through her employer and has volunteered at her university’s legal aid clinic and for the Citizens Advice Bureau. Mopé has always been a firm believer that legal aid should be accessible to everyone regardless of whether they can afford it.
Mopé Akinyemi’s desire to make a change in the legal profession stems from her own experiences during the rigorous application process to break into the profession. Mopé believes that the formal and informal mentorships she received from women, particularly women from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, inspired her with confidence and skills to excel and secure a training contract. Mopé’s desire to give back is what led to her decision to become a mentor at The BAME Woman in Law.
