Efua Brew-Hammond (Mentor)
Efua, fondly referred to as Effie serves as a co-founder at The BAME Woman in Law. Concurrently, Effie holds the position of a Legal Advisor (in training) for the Justices in the Magistrates Court, where her responsibilities encompass offering advice on points of law, practice and procedure, as well as aiding in the formulation and drafting of judicial reasons.
Before taking up this role, Effie jumped at the offer to work with Forrest Williams, an award-winning, solicitor law firm specialising in criminal defence & motoring law, where she developed and managed cases daily.
Having studied law at a degree level in Ghana, Effie moved to the UK to expand her legal training and has been called to the Bar of England and Wales. During Effie's studies, she earned the ‘Initiative Employability’ award, achieved a ‘distinction’ grade in various subjects on the Barrister Training Course and obtained a qualification as a certified ADR-ODR mediator.
Effie’s interest in mentoring stems from a desire to inspire others, recognising that her achievements, experiences and even her shortcomings could be just that push her mentees need to keep pursuing a career in law. Effie started on this mentorship journey in 2021, offering guidance and advice on a personal level to mainly Ghanaian students seeking to further their legal education in the UK and African law students in England.
Efua Brew-Hammond has now dedicated herself to professionally assisting others from non-traditional backgrounds, furthering equality of opportunity and working towards positive change in the legal industry.

Mopé Akinyemi (Mentor)
Mopé is currently a trainee solicitor for Burges Salmon, a UK top 50 law firm. Having sat with the corporate finance team and currently training in the firm’s tax and trusts department, Mopé has a desire to encourage BAME women to consider applying to large corporate and commercial law firms and is inspired to be part of those who seek to break down the barriers in these spaces.
Mopé studied at the University of Sheffield, graduating in 2020 with a Hons Degree in European and International Law and went on to complete her MSc LPC in 2023 with Distinction. Mopé's time during her undergraduate and postgraduate studies enabled her to hone on necessary skills to become a successful solicitor, including her interpersonal skills and high attention to detail.
Aside from commercial law, Mopé has always been keen to give back to her community. Mopé currently mentors 16–18-year-olds interested in the legal sphere through her employer and has volunteered at her university’s legal aid clinic and for the Citizens Advice Bureau. Mopé has always been a firm believer that legal aid should be accessible to everyone regardless of whether they can afford it.
Mopé Akinyemi’s desire to make a change in the legal profession stems from her own experiences during the rigorous application process to break into the profession. Mopé believes that the formal and informal mentorships she received from women, particularly women from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, inspired her with confidence and skills to excel and secure a training contract. Mopé’s desire to give back is what led to her decision to become a mentor at The BAME Woman in Law. Mopé believes that not only can BAME women overcome the barriers they face in the legal world and beyond, but these women in turn will make space for the next generation of BAME female lawyers.

Chloe-Ann is a Newly Qualified Solicitor at Foot Anstey LLP, a Top 100 Law Firm. Having completed seats in Succession & Tax, Commercial Property, Corporate and a client secondment with KFC, she has a range of experiences working with different teams in a commercial law firm.

She co-founded Cardiff University's Filipino Society and during her time as President, she helped establish the society ensuring it was a safe and inclusive space. Chloe-Ann is passionate about creating more spaces like this and making them accessible. It was therefore a natural progression for Chloe-Ann to incorporate this passion with her career ambitions and to focus her MSc project on diversity, equality, and inclusion in the legal sector.
Chloe-Ann has continued to demonstrate this passion and is one of the founding members of Foot Anstey's Asian Connections group, which she continues to co-lead, providing an open platform for colleagues with links to Asian heritage to connect. She believes mentor schemes like this are a great way to achieve that.
As a firm believer in 'you can't be what you can't see', Chloe-Ann Roberts-Hawkey is delighted to be joining The BAME Woman in Law team and is excited about working with women from underrepresented backgrounds to help them access this space - reshaping the future of the legal sector.
