DIVERSITY IN LAW

The Overarching Vision

We strive for a legal sector where the only hurdles to entry and barriers to success are competency and strong work ethics.

In very simple terms, our belief is that those best able to do a job should be appointed to it irrespective of race, gender, class or their personal characteristics.

A Deeper Dive…

The UK is undoubtedly home to many immigrants and its diverse, multicultural nature makes it a welcoming place to live, however, the concrete reality is this:

In the realm of work, the legal industry remains thickly composed of a homogeneous gender and racial demographic.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (often referred to as EDI or ED&I) has for several years remained the subject matter for discussion in law firms, chambers and other institutions providing legal services.

What Do The Statistics Say?

Based on data gathered in the summer of 2023 from nearly all SRA-regulated firms, a key finding revealed by the SRA was that 19% of lawyers working across all firms are of Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic origins.

When rounded up, the figures for each category are as follows:

12% Asian

3% Black

3% Mixed / Multiple

1% Other

A further question to be considered is this; out of the 19% how many constitute BAME women?

The above data shows a steady but slight increase in the proportion of BAME lawyers in law firms given the figures were 14% in 2015, and 18% in 2021. Whilst there appears to be some diversity in our overall workforce, the present figures show a great deal remains to be done.

Thus, the mission of The BAME Woman in Law is to advance diversity within the legal profession, breaking down barriers that hinder the progression of BAME individuals.

Why Do We Advocate for A Diverse Workforce?

Whether an employee or employer, a diverse team is a win for us all and here’s why:

  1. Diversity in law brings forth a richer range of perspectives. Research indicates that diverse teams make more informed decisions and demonstrate greater intelligence compared to teams lacking diversity

  2. A workforce characterised by diversity and equity births inventive solutions and gives rise to innovative ideas

  3. A diverse team fosters social awareness, promoting increased critical thinking and emotional intelligence. This is pertinent to the successful development of any organisation

  4. In conjunction with the points above, a workforce rich in diversity contributes to broadening the job market, ultimately enhancing financial performance across the legal industry
